What to Expect: Pre-Tournament
What to Expect: Tournament Schedule
As a member of the Junction City Wrestling Club, you have the option to attend as many or as few tournaments as you wish. The JCWC Tournament Schedule includes the tournaments that the club will attend as a team. JCWC coaches will attend all events on this schedule.
Adjustments may be made to the schedule throughout the season. Information regarding changes will be posted on StackTeam and communicated at practice.
Additional opportunities to compete can be found at
https://usawks.com/tournaments, but the club cannot guarantee a coach will be present. If you choose to attend events not listed on the schedule, you are responsible for ensuring that a coach is present.
What to Expect: Tournament Registrations
Individuals are responsible for tournament registration and payment. Registrations will be done online through Track Wrestling or USA Bracketing. Links to upcoming registrations will be posted on StackTeam and information will be shared at practice. All available flyers will be attached to the registration links and calendar. The event flyers provide specific details about the tournament (location, weigh-in information, weight classes offered, wrestling times for each age group, etc.).
What to Expect: Weigh-Ins
All wrestlers must weigh-in at the designated location at the specific date and time in order to compete. Weights cannot be e-mailed, texted, or called in. Wrestlers are required to weigh-in wearing a competition singlet and nails must be trimmed. Some tournaments allow your wrestler to bump up to the next weight if they do not make their registered weight—others do not, and you lose out on your registration fee.
*If your wrestler has a skin ailment and has been cleared to wrestle, bring a skin form signed by your physician to the weigh-in.
Home-Site Weigh-Ins
Home-site weigh-ins will be held at Junction City Middle School. Home site weigh-in date and times will be announced using the StackTeam app and will typically be held either the Friday or Saturday prior to the scheduled tournament.
Satellite Weigh-Ins
Satellite weigh-ins are locations specified by each individual tournament director and may or may not be held in Junction City. Satellite weigh-in locations will be communicated through the StackTeam app as soon as the information is available.
What to Expect: Tournament Day
Pack Your Bags
Double-check that your wrestler has the following:
- Their singlet on, with shorts/pants and a hoodie over it to stay warm during the tournament
- Wrestling shoes (bring them with you and put them on when you arrive)
- Headgear (Optional)
- Any skin ailments properly covered & skin form with you in case someone has questions.
- Plan to be sitting in a gym for 4-5 hours. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase at concessions or you may bring your own.
Tournament Start Times
Check the tournament flyer for wrestling times, as each tournament can vary. Tournament Flyers will be linked to the calendar in StackTeam. Some tournaments use a “split” format, where certain age divisions wrestle in the morning, and others wrestle in the afternoon. Plan to arrive 1 hour prior to your wrestling time so the wrestlers have time to warm up and parents can get good seating. Sit with other Junction City parents, if possible! It makes for good conversation and a cheering section is always nice.
Reading Brackets
Brackets are typically available the morning of the tournament online on Track Wrestling or USA Bracketing. Your wrestler's bracket will have an assigned Mat number. This is the mat your wrestler will be on for the whole day. Your bracket will also include match numbers. For example, if your child’s match number is 408, you are assigned to Mat 4 and your child is the 8th match.
Matches
Plan to take your wrestler down to the mat 4-5 matches prior to his/her match. If your wrestler can walk down on his/her own, it is okay to send them down to the mat to warm up and find a coach. Wrestlers should be match-ready (singlet, shoes, and headgear) when they get to the mat. When your wrestler’s match is ready to begin, they will check in with the table workers by stating their name. A red or green leg band color will be assigned by table workers for scoring, and a coach will sit in the corner of the mat. Do not allow your child’s match to begin until a coach arrives. If a coach is not at your mat, have the table workers page a Junction City Wrestling Coach to the mat. 6U and 8U and matches are generally 3, 1-minute periods. 10U, 12U and 14U are 3x 1.5-minute periods. After your wrestler’s match ends, they need to return to their seat with their parents or other teammates and wait to get ready for their next match.
Parent Expectations
JCWC parents are discouraged from sitting matside during matches. While we understand that other organizations may allow it, sitting at the edge of the mat can be a distraction for our wrestlers and interfere with their focus and performance. We appreciate your support from the designated spectator areas to help our athletes perform their best.
Awards
Most tournaments provide awards to wrestlers 1st-4th place. Specific information about awards can be found on the event flyer. Following the completion of the tournament wrestlers will need to visit the awards table to receive their award.
